Biography of Manuel Neuer
Manuel Neuer is a living legend of German football, the No. 1 goalkeeper and one of the most important players in the team formations of the German squad. Today, his name inspires fear in opponents and inspires confidence in teammates. After all, excellent reflexes and the ability to subtly “read the game” make him just a perfect goalkeeper.
But what else do we know about this famous football player? How did his football career develop? What events played a major role in his fate and professional development? Our article today, dedicated to one of the best goalkeepers in modern football history, will help you understand all this.
Childhood and family of Manuel Neuer
The future famous goalkeeper was born in one of the largest cities in Germany – Gelsenkirchen. The main football team in this region was the well-known club Schalke 04. Every child dreamed of this club, and our today’s hero is no exception.
Manuel Neuer as a child
From the age of five, Manuel began playing football at the Pitmen’s academy (as Schalke 04 is often called). In this place, his formation as a professional football player took place. Here, in the youth teams of the club, Neuer tried on goalkeeper gloves for the first time.
According to Manuel’s coaches, the choice of playing position was largely due to the player’s excellent anthropometric data. A good goalkeeper must be tall, have great jumping ability, and have great reflexes, all of which the young player had. That is why, at an early age, Manuel Neuer became the permanent goalkeeper of all the youth teams of Schalke 04. Great hopes were placed on him. And he fully justified them.
At the age of seventeen, the young goalkeeper began to play for the Pitmen’s reserve team in the Regionalliga (which at that moment was actually the third division of German football). However, the player’s professional career began with a series of defeats. At that time, the Schalke reserve team was quite weak, and therefore the goalkeeper has always remained virtually the only stronghold of the entire team.

That year the team was relegated from the Regionalliga to the fourth division of German football. However, despite this circumstance, the game of the young Manuel Neuer liked the bosses of the first team, and very soon he took over as a reserve goalkeeper in the first team of the club.

In the 2005/2006 season, the place of the main goalkeeper in the team was occupied by an experienced and reliable goalkeeper Frank Rost, who had been the club’s main goalkeeper for several years. It seemed that the young and promising Manuel was simply doomed to the role of an eternal reservist. However, soon Frank Rost received a microtrauma, and our today’s hero had the opportunity to prove himself in one of the games of the national championship.

The debut match of the young goalkeeper in the first Bundesliga was the game “Alemania” (won in the end with a score of 1-0). After that, Neuer returned to the bench again, but already in the tenth round match he again got the opportunity to prove himself. This time, the formidable Bayern Munich became the rival of the Gelsenkirchens, which became a real test of strength for the young goalkeeper. And Manuel did not blunder. In that match, he conceded two goals, however, without a doubt, he was one of the best players on the field. The final draw 2-2 was largely his merit.
This fact was noted by the then coach of Schalke 04 Mirko Slomke, who decided to trust the young goalkeeper in the rest of the season’s matches. In total, the goalkeeper played in 27 games that year, conceding an average of just under one goal per game.
During subsequent seasons, Manuel remained the main goalkeeper of the team. His inspired game was noted by fans and journalists. Football experts also complained about him, in 2007 they named Manuel Neuer the best goalkeeper of the German championship. Thus, for several seasons, Manuel Neuer became one of the main stars of the team. However, despite this, staying with the Pitmen did not suit the ambitious goalkeeper very much (by that time he had already managed to take the place of the main goalkeeper of the German national team). Remaining one of the best clubs in the Bundesliga, Schalke 04, however, has never been able to boast a large number of trophies.
Personal life of Manuel Neuer
Since 2009, Manuel Neuer has been dating a girl named Catherine Gilch, who works in the modeling business. The meeting of two lovers took place during one of the matches of the German national team. Young people really liked each other and began to communicate. Some time later Katrin moved in with her boyfriend in Gelsenkirchen. However, Neuer himself soon had to pack his bags. This time, the lovers settled in Catherine’s hometown – Munich. According to some reports, Neuer’s transfer from Schalke 04 to Bayern Munich was due to the desire to be closer to his girlfriend.

Today Katrin Gilch does not miss a single match of her star lover. As they say, before entering the field, a player always looks for his beloved girl in the stands.
Manuel Neuer now
This state of affairs made Manuel Neuer think about changing his club registration. In 2011, despite all sorts of persuasion from the Pitmen’s management, the goalkeeper refused to renew his contract and already in June of the same year signed a five-year contract with Bayern Munich. As part of FC Hollywood (as Munich is often called), the player immediately became the main goalkeeper and was able to win the German Cup and Super Cup with the team, as well as become the owner of the Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League gold medals.

Already a player in Bayern, Manuel Neuer was awarded the title of the best player in Germany (2011). To a large extent, this success was facilitated by bright games in the German national team. As part of the German national team, “Manu” became the bronze medalist of the 2010 World Championship and the 2012 European Championship. At Euro 2012, the player even entered the symbolic team of the tournament.
At present, Manuel Neuer still defends the colors of Bayern Munich and the Bundesmanschaft, dreaming of new victories and achievements.
In the 2013/14 season, Bayern won 4 awards in a season: the Bundesliga, the German Cup, the German Super Cup and the UEFA Champions League. In the Bundesliga, Manuel played 31 matches, conceding only 18 goals. In the UEFA Champions League, Manuel played 13 matches, conceding 11 goals. At the same time, he did not concede a single goal from Barcelona.
The German national team successfully performed at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014, taking first place. She beat Argentina 1-0 in the final match. Manuel Neuer received the Golden Glove as the world’s best goalkeeper.
Manuel is known as a goalkeeper who often leaves the net. In the match with Wolfsburg, Manuel ran out of the goal and dribbled the ball to the central half of the field, giving a pass to the Bayern player. In the match against Chelsea for the UEFA Super Cup, he headed the ball from the center of the field into the opponent’s penalty area, in that match Bayern equalized and won in the penalty shootout.
