Childhood and youth
Martin (Martin John Christopher Freeman) was the fifth child in the family of a naval officer in Aldershot, England. Shortly after the birth of his son in 1971, his parents divorced, little Freeman stayed with his dad. When the boy was 10 years old, his father died of a heart attack, and Martin began to live with his mother.

Until the age of 14, he played for the British national squash team. His older brothers and sister showed interest in the fine arts. For example, his brother Tim was the lead singer of Frazier Chorus, and his brother Jamie was a web designer and music artist. Martin succumbed to the general inclination a little later.
From the age of 15, Martin began to play in youth performances at a Catholic school, and after graduation he received an acting diploma from the London Central School of Dramatic Art, one of the most famous art educational institutions in the UK.
Actor career
Freeman is a short man with rustic features, which did not allow him to claim the role of courageous love heroes, and he appeared only in episodes and minor roles, for example, in the TV series This Life in 1997.

In 2000, Freeman was cast as a doctor on the sitcom Black’s Books, written by Dylan Moran. A notable role was played by Martin in the British version of The Office, where he worked with director and lead actor Ricky Jarvis.
Freeman was also remembered by the audience for his role as a sex understudy in the film Love Actually. The aspiring actor worked on the same set with established stars such as Hugh Grant, Colin Firth and Liam Neeson.

In 2005, the film adaptation of the novel by Douglas Adams “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” was released, where Martin Freeman brilliantly coped with the role of a “typical English traveler” in the company of Sam Rockwell (“The Green Mile”, “Three Billboards on the Border of Ebbing, Missouri”) and a rising star of the world cinematography by Zooey Deschanel.

At the age of 40, the actor was lucky enough to get the role of Dr. Watson in the BBC series Sherlock. Although the series about one of the most famous detectives is another adaptation of the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the world of modern London, in which already familiar characters are placed, dictates its own rules. Unexpected plot twists, talented camera work and original editing made Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch world-famous and brought the series and the actors Emmy statuettes in 2014.

The next significant role in the actor’s career was the character of Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit trilogy, on which he worked from 2012 to 2014. The actor for the main role was selected for a long time, and when Freeman was approved, Peter Jackson had to postpone the shooting for three months, as Martin was busy working on the Sherlock series. Together with Freeman in the trilogy, Ian McKellen played the role of Gandalf, as well as Benedict Cumberbatch, who was familiar to Martin from his previous work, whose voice and facial expressions are possessed by the dragon Smaug.
In 2014, Freeman is the protagonist of the first season of the television series Fargo in the black tragicomedy genre, based on the plot of the Coen Brothers film of the same name. The role of a quiet, downtrodden family man, whose life changes dramatically after meeting the hero of Billy Bob Thornton, brought the actor nominations for the Emmy and Golden Globe awards.
Martin Freeman in Marvel
In 2015, Freeman signed a contract with Marvel Studios, becoming a part of this cinematic universe as CIA agent Evertt Ross. In 2016, the film Captain America: Civil War was released, where Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson played along with the actor. In 2018, Freeman returned to play Evertt Ross in Black Panther opposite Chadwick Boseman.

Martin Freeman now
In 2019, Martin Freeman starred in the mini-series Confessions. His hero, detective Fulcher, is trying to find and punish a maniac, but for this he needs to break all conceivable and unthinkable rules. The series is based on real events.

In 2024, Martin, along with actress Daisy Haggard, presented a wonderful acting tandem. In the series “Parents of the Year” they played a married couple raising three children. Their heroes can not find a balance between home, upbringing, career and leisure. After the premiere, the actor admitted that he did not always comply with the rule that his character mentions in the series: “Do not hit children and do not call them“ little bastards “”: “I spanked them a couple of times and called them“ little bastards ”more often than I wanted to would”. He also laughed at those who claim that even the smallest children can be communicated rationally. The project was renewed for a second season.
