Anne Shirley has plenty of wisdom to share

Though she may have never realized it, Anne Shirley was full of insight. Based on some of the things she says throughout even just the first book as a young girl, we can see she has plenty of wisdom to share. Here is a list of 8 valuable things we can learn from Anne.

1. You can make the best out of any situation.

“It’s been my experience that you can nearly always enjoy things if you make up your mind firmly that you will.” – Anne of Green Gables.

These are wise words from an eleven-year-old. Sometimes, it doesn’t matter how bad a situation may seem, it’s all in how you choose to deal with it. If you choose to ‘make up you mind firmly’ to enjoy it, or if choose to just be miserable about it. Of course, there are exceptions to this, but in most cases it is good advice.

2. Don’t forget to have fun, every now and then.

“Life is worth living as long as there’s a laugh in it.” – Anne of Green Gables.

This is so true. Sometimes we get so caught up in life worrying about tasks, deadlines, and the grind of daily life, that we forget to slow down and just have a good laugh.

3. Tomorrow is always a new day.

“Tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it… yet.” – Anne of Green Gables.

It doesn’t matter how rough of day you’ve had, or how many mistakes you made. Always remember that tomorrow is a fresh new day with no mistakes in it…yet!

4. Winning isn’t everything.

“Next to trying and winning, the best thing is trying and failing.” – Anne of Green Gables.

“That may make me feel badly tomorrow, Josie,” laughed Anne, “but just now I honestly feel that as long as I know the violets are coming out all purple down in the hollow below Green Gables and that little ferns are poking their heads up in Lovers’ Lane, it’s not a great deal of difference whether I win the Avery or not. I’ve done my best and I begin to understand what is meant by the `joy of the strife.’ Next to trying and winning, the best thing is trying and failing.

5. Face duty with courage

“She had looked her duty courageously in the face and found it a friend–as duty ever is when we meet it frankly.” – Anne of Green Gables.

This quote comes right after Marilla goes to see the doctor about her eyes, and he tells her she must not do anything to strain them.

“Then Anne went herself to the east gable and sat down by her window in the darkness alone with her tears and her heaviness of heart. How sadly things had changed since she had sat there the night after coming home! Then she had been full of hope and joy and the future had looked rosy with promise. Anne felt as if she had lived years since then, but before she went to bed there was a smile on her lips and peace in her heart. She had looked her duty courageously in the face and found it a friend–as duty ever is when we meet it frankly.”

6. Always look on the bright side of things…

“Don’t be very frightened, Marilla. I was walking the ridge-pole and I fell off. I suspect I have sprained my ankle. But, Marilla, I might have broken my neck. Let us look on the bright side of things.” – Anne of Green Gables.

7. Waiting for things doesn’t have to tiresome.

“Oh Marilla, looking forward to things is half the pleasure of them,” exclaimed Anne.” – Anne of Green Gables.

8. Sometimes the harder it is, the more satisfying it is when it’s over.

“It’s so hard to get up again—although of course the harder it is the more satisfaction you have when you do get up, haven’t you?” – Anne of Green Gables.
